Sohini Basu
I am a theatre and dance artist for more than two decades. A Nrtiya Prabhakar in Kathak dance – an Indian Classical dance, and a trained theatre practitioner from Lebedoff School at Russian Cultural Centre, Kolkata, India, I am now a part of the theatre group, Shudrka Hyderabad. I am also an All India Radio artist in elocution and drama divisions. I have performed in more than 15 stage plays and 20 radio dramas and elocution programmes. My deepest passion is to find a way to combine my background in Bengali theatre with my current explorations in dance, theatre for social change.
Apart from acting, I oversee, implement and ensure sustainability of Shudrka Hyderabad’s operations, programs, finances and community support. I work in partnership with the director as peers in the organizational structure and direct administration, audience services, marketing and communications, funding; support and arrange theatre workshops in schools for young learners and teachers; work closely with the director to schedule rehearsals, plan and enhance artistic excellence and audience experience; write applications and articles for participation in festivals.
I am also trained in economics and gender studies. My association with the social development sector for more than 15 years has given me the opportunity to work with women, children and the community at large and has helped me to hone my social work skills in empowerment, skill development of beneficiaries and for advocacy purposes.
Due to an accident in 2018, I was bed-ridden for two years and have a right-hand deformity.
